What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the management of periodontal diseases, that is diseases of the bone and gum that support the teeth, and in placement of dental implants and treatment of the gum and bone around dental implants. Following completion of 5 years at dental school and a period of time in general practice, periodontists complete 3 years of university based specialist training. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.
Periodontal Treatments
Periodontists provide a wide range of diagnostic, non-surgical and surgical treatments with the aim of improving and maintaining periodontal health. Periodontists are specially trained in the placement of dental implants, and in treatment of gum and bone disorders around implants. Periodontists also carry out surgical procedures to improve the appearance and function of teeth, implants, crowns and bridges, for example crown lengthening (or “gum lift”) procedures, soft tissue grafting for root coverage, and hard tissue grafting to prepare for implant treatment.
